The National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies (NAMIC) is urging lawmakers to address what it believes are significant flaws in privacy legislation approved by a U.S. House subcommittee.
The American Privacy Rights Act, approved by the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Innovation, Data, and Commerce, seeks to establish a national privacy standard. However, Jimi Grande, senior vice president of federal and political affairs for NAMIC, notes in a letter to the subcommittee that the bill’s many exemptions will undermine that goal, and the enforcement mechanisms in the bill will lead to higher costs for businesses and consumers.
