Mountain Lions Reduce Deer-Vehicle Collisions by Up to 76%

Puma presence on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula was associated with a 76% reduction in the expected number of deer-vehicle collisions over a five-year period, according to research published Aug. 5 in the Cell Press journal Current Biology.

Researchers led by Justin Suraci of Conservation Science Partners analyzed detections from 503 camera trap sites and GPS collar data from 59 pumas, then overlaid five years of wildlife-vehicle collision records from the Washington State Department of Transportation covering July 2020 through June 2025. The camera and collar data were collected by Tribal biologists working with Panthera through the Olympic Cougar Project.
