Consumer sentiment slid for the second consecutive month in April, reaching a level comparable to the mid-2022 trough as the Iran conflict, elevated gasoline prices and sustained concerns over the cost of durable goods weighed on household views, according to the University of Michigan Surveys of Consumers final release issued April 24.
The Index of Consumer Sentiment fell to 49.8 in April, down 6.6% from 53.3 in March and 4.6% below the April 2025 reading of 52.2. The Current Economic Conditions Index dropped 5.9% to 52.5, a 12.2% decline from a year earlier, while the Index of Consumer Expectations fell
