California Insurance Commissioner Responds to Concerns Over Insurance Industry Reelection Campaign Donations, Meetings with Execs

In a letter to Californians on September 3, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara responded to growing concerns over his reelection campaign’s acceptance of funds from executives and family members of insurance companies regulated by his office, breaking a campaign promise and the precedent of previous commissioners. The donations and closely timed meetings with insurance executives with links to the donors raised ethical concerns.

In July, the San Diego Union Tribune reported that the Lara, elected as California’s Insurance Commissioner last year, accepted over $54,000 from insurance company executives and their apparent spouses for his reelection campaign in recent months. The donations,

    Just another life long career politician using the office of insurance commissioner as a stepping stone. He knew exactly what he was doing and is now covering his ass.
