Police Reported Crashes Up Over 6% in 2014, 16% Due to Distracted Driving

According to research just released by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) both the number of police reported crashes and the percentage that involved distracted driving increased in 2014.

Police Reported Crashes 2010-2014

According to the report:

  • The overall number of police reported crashes surpassed 6 million in 2014, up 6.6 percent from 2013 and 11.9 percent from 2010.
  • Ten percent of fatal crashes, 18 percent of injury crashes, and 16 percent of all police-reported motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2014 were reported as distraction-affected crashes.
  • In 2014, there were 3,179 people killed and an estimated additional 431,000 injured
